This was such a sweet read. I loved Ellen, the slightly nerdy heroine of the story, and her journey to maturity. And while she seemed a little clueless at times, I was so glad she rallied where it counted. This book was full of wit, and really well developed characters. I learnt a lot about the harp world and being a wedding musician, and I very much enjoyed what seemed to be a highly accurate representation of working in the industry.
There were some suitably bitchy antagonists that made me want to step into the book and yell at them on Ellen's behalf, and there was a lovely slow-building romance, where I was dying to read the ending. I even gasped / half-cried in one scene, but I won't share any spoilers.
If you like your chick-lit clever and thoughtful, I highly recommend this book!

Ellen the Harpist Diane Michaels 9780997710717 Books Reviews
I really enjoyed this book! It was very well written, with much more emotional depth than one usually finds in a light romantic coming-of-age story. I just wanted to keep getting to know the characters better, and to see where the next chapter would take them. I also loved how the life of a gigging musician was treated with realism and humor, and not overly exaggerated. I will always notice the musicians at a wedding from now on!
What a great way to start the summer - reading this book!!! It allows a glimpse into the life of this harpist and is funny, sad, interesting and well paced. You will find yourself rooting for Ellen one moment and slapping her the next! Through it all you really get in her corner and that keeps you reading and hoping. Harpists can make up their gig bag from all the song references!!! Well done, Diane!!!! Ellen the Harpist Volume 2 ?????
I really enjoyed the behind the scenes look at being a freelance musician, and Ellen was a great character who I liked reading about.
I bought this out of curiosity as part of a grab bag of vacation reading. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Also by the interesting glimpses into how professional musicians operate; what challenges they face and how they meet them. The story is told well and sympathetically by the woman who is the subject of its title…mixing her professional and romantic lives. I was rooting for her all the way.
This caught my attention because I don't think I've ever read a story featuring a harpist before. But it was just a variation of the usual romance plots and the characters weren't interesting enough to keep me reading in spite of the banal plot.
As a musician it was very relatable and often funny, The plot development was rushed and somewhat jumbled at times. I lost track of the various love interest and had to go back to reread. Altogether a fun, light read.
Through a first person narrative, 27 year old Ellen reveals her insecurities in interpersonal relationships, especially with men, at the same time she celebrates herself as a harpist. This well-written novel draws you into the world of professional musicians and their crucial role in making weddings a wondrous experience.
As an older person, I thought I might not be interested in the problems, personal choices, weaknesses and strengths of a young woman, her friends, family members and acquaintances, but I was wrong. With vivid detail, humor and pathos, the author drew me in with her insights on human behavior. I especially appreciated the intergenerational friendship between Ellen and a woman in her building and for Ellen to be open to her guidance.
If there is a sequel to Ellen’s journey so far, I will surely read it!
